Education Programs
In the Society’s Strategic Plan, the primary focus of all programs and outreach is a philosophy and program models that strive to lift individuals beyond the grasp of their present situation and not merely putting a temporary “fix” on the situation.
Begun in 1999, the education and training program was developed to respond to the growing need of individuals and families in crisis. Those in crisis generally lack the skills necessary to survive independently in our society. The Education Programs are constantly evolving so that the Center can offer the classes, programs and workshops that best address the current needs of the clients and local community.
Enrollment has increased by almost 300% since the program’s inception in 1999. Class topics are developed as needs arise, and specific classes are made available at local St. Vincent de Paul Conferences. Classes are offered in basic literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), GED preparation (in Spanish and English), basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint), financial planning and budgeting, and nutrition and food shopping.
The Family Support Center collaborates with local Conferences and partnering agencies to provide both the instructor training or volunteer instructors to lead the classes in local areas. Opportunities are announced as the need arises. Volunteer teachers are always needed. Registration information and 2009 Fall Class Schedule are available here and by calling 770-458-5415.
